Three people were killed after two helicopters collided over a fire near Cabazon in Riverside County Sunday evening. A Bell 407 helicopter, contracted by CalFire was doing recon over the “Broadway Fire” when it collided with a Skycrane. The Skycrane safely landed while the Bell crashed to the ground.
Aboard the Bell were CalFire Assistant Chief Josh Bischof, CalFire Captain Tim Rodriguez and contract pilot Tony Sousa. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.
“Our hearts are broken at the loss of our colleagues, mentors, and friends. Josh and Tim were exceptional firefighters and people. We grieve with their families and loved ones, and our prayers are with them,” said Bill Weiser, CalFire/Riverside County Fire Chief.
