Families in Upland are taking legal action against the Upland Unified School District after racist cards were made by students at Peppertree Elementary School. The lawsuit was announced by the Cochran Firm in West Los Angeles on February 27th. The targets of the bullying were 11 and 12 year olds who said that sixth graders at the school taunted them.
The kids were given cards that read “your my favorite monkey” and you’re my favorite slave.” The card showed an image of a black person hanging from a tree. Parents say this is not first example of racism within the district. The parents are suing the district for civil rights violations and are asking the California Attorney General to investigate. Other parents say the district took too long to send a letter out notifying other families of the incident.
