Huu Can Tran was identified as the sole person responsible for killing 10 people at the Star Ballroom in Monterey Park Saturday night. Tran shot an additional 10 people that were transported to hospitals in various conditions. A manhunt began for Tran and he was located, driving a van in the city of Torrance late Sunday morning. As a SWAT team surrounded the van, Tran shot and killed himself.

Sunday night, Hemet police officers, US Marshals and other law enforcement officials descended on Tran’s mobile home in a quiet gated community known as “The Lakes.” Neighbors were stunned to learn their neighbor, 72-year old Huu Can Tran was responsible for the shootings. “He was very nice and kept to himself, he lived alone,” said one neighbor. Officials spent much of the night collecting evidence from Tran’s home as they search for answers in the shootings. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna spoke about the Hemet search warrant Monday afternoon saying a Rifle, numerous rounds of .308 ammunition and several electronic devices were recovered. The Sheriff also says Tran may have been manufacturing gun silencers.

Hemet Police say Tran came to the Hemet Police Department lobby on January 7th and 9th alleging past fraud, theft and poisoning allegations involving his family in the Los Angeles area 10-20 years ago. Tran told police he would return with documentation regarding the allegations but never returned.
