A Riverside Sheriff Deputy was killed Friday evening after responding to a domestic disturbance call. Deputy Darnell Calhoun was the first arriving deputy at the call in the 18000 block of Hilldale in the Lakeland Village area at 4:20pm. A suspect began firing at Calhoun. Calhoun was struck by the gunfire and rushed to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar. Deputy Calhoun died at the hospital.

The suspect was also shot and is in critical condition. Sheriff Chad Bianco did not elaborate details about the suspect during a news conference Friday night outside of the hospital. The suspect was identified Saturday morning as Jesse Navarro, a 42-year old resident of Lake Elsinore. This is the second deputy to be killed in the line of duty in two weeks for his department. Deputy Isaiah Cordero was just laid to rest on Friday January 6th after being shot December 29th during a traffic stop in Jurupa Valley.

“I shouldn’t be here, having to do this again. I am devastated to have to tell about the loss of another one of our deputy sheriffs,” said Bianco. Calhoun came to the Riverside Sheriff Department in February 2022 from the San Diego Police Department where he worked there for two years. He was assigned to the Lake Elsinore station.
