Triple Homicide Suspect Shot and Killed by Sheriff Deputies

A triple homicide suspect was shot and killed by San Bernardino Sheriff Deputies in rural San Bernardino County on Friday afternoon. The suspect vehicle, a red Kia Soul was spotted by the aviation division on Highway 247. As deputies on the ground caught up with the vehicle, the driver, Austin Edwards sped away leading deputies on a pursuit. The San Bernardino Sheriff SWAT team joined the pursuit. Edwards fired at deputies several times during the pursuit. Edwards lost control of his vehicle along Kelso Cima Road in Kelso. He continued to exchange gunfire with deputies. A female teen exited the vehicle and was rescued. Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy by the San Bernardino County coroner determined Edwards died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Edwards had a warrant out for his arrest after a triple homicide in Riverside. Police there initially responded to distress call in the 11200 block of Price Court earlier in the day. They responded to check the welfare of a young female who was getting into a Red Kia Soul. Just a few houses away, 911 calls came in of a structure fire. As firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames, they discovered three bodies, apparent victims of a homicide. The victims were identified as 69-year old Mark Winek, 65-year old Sharie Winek and daughter 38-year old Brooke Winek.

Police believe Edwards met a teen online and developed a relationship with her. Edwards who resided in Virginia, traveled to the meet the teen. Police say Edwards murdered her family- the teen’s grandmother, grandfather and mother before fleeing with her. Detectives have also learned Edwards was recently employed with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia.
