California Bans Gasoline-Powered Vehicles by 2035

California Air Resources Board members voted to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars in the state of California by 2035. Interim targets have been set in the plan to begin a gradual phase-out before the total ban takes effect. This is the first such ban worldwide.

Starting in 2026, 35% of new cars, SUV’s and small pickups sold in the state of California would be required to be zero-emission vehicles. Each year that requirement increases leading up the 2035 ban.

Used vehicles would be allowed to stay on the road.
