The Sheep Fire near Highway 2 just south of Wrightwood started out a 1/4 acre fire Saturday evening. By nightfall the fire grew to 35 acres. As the winds picked up Sunday afternoon and temperatures rose, the fire quickly exploded to 990 acres within just a few hours.
It jumped Highway 2 in several spots threatening structures and forcing evacuations. Hundreds of firefighters rushed to assist those already in the area fighting the fire. Worried residents evacuated horses and other animals from nearby ranch properties. The fire is only 5% contained. Highway 2 remains closed from 138 to the town of Wrightwood.
