Firefighters from San Bernardino County and the US Forest Service rushed to contain a fire that broke out near Highway 18. The fire was first reported just after 11am Monday morning. A car caught fire on Old Waterman Canyon sparking a 35-acre fire that raced up the hillside and jumped highway 18.

Dozens of firefighters, airtankers and helicopter battled the flames, eventually getting a line around the fire. Firefighters named the incident “The Peak Fire.” Highway 18 was closed in both directions. Structures were briefly threatened. By Monday night, at least one lane in both directions was opened on Highway 18. The fire was also 20 percent contained.
