San Bernardino Sheriff Deputy Shot, Dies from Injuries

A San Bernardino Sheriff Deputy was shot after pulling over a motorcycle with no plates in Yucca Valley Monday afternoon. The suspect shot the deputy in the head and fled into the desert. The deputy was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The suspect dumped his bike at Dumosa and Sunnyslope Drive. He was confronted by several other deputies who exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The suspect was shot and killed.

The Deputy was identified as Sergeant Vaca who had 17 years of experience with the department and was assigned to the Morongo Basin station. Sergeant Vaca died Monday night of his injuries. A procession was held early Tuesday morning from Desert Regional Medical Center to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s office in San Bernardino. Dozens of law enforcement agencies participated in the procession.  

The investigation is ongoing.
