Kaiser Out: Riverside County Appoints New Health Director

Dr. Cameron Kaiser has been ousted as the Riverside County Health Director. The board of supervisors met during a closed-door hearing to remove Kaiser from his position.

Dr. Geoffrey Leung has been appointed in Kaiser’s place. Leung has led the county’s incident management team for the vaccine rollout.

“I am honored to serve in this new capacity and look forward to continuing the important work of the department as we focus on recovering from this pandemic,” said Dr. Leung. “Public health, at its core, is about protecting communities from disease, preserving health and prolonging life. This pandemic has underscored how critical public health is to our everyday lives and ensuring the health of our communities.”

Dr. Leung has served as the Ambulatory Medical Director for Riverside University health and has been the chair of family medicine for RUHS.

Kaiser grew controversy with the Riverside County Board of Supervisors after making a mask mandate last April. During several heated board meetings in May, the board asked Kaiser to rescind the mandate which was later replaced by a statewide mandate.
